| The pediatrics department turned to GlobalMedia and their Mobile Video Cart, the i8570es. This all-in-one ergonomic solution includes the EasyShareVC video conferencing and communications software, high-quality full-screen video, echo-free audio, remote camera control and an integrated digital stethoscope for remote auscultation. The group had researched and pursued a variety of options, but realized that the more traditional video conferencing solutions were too rigid in design and too expensive to implement and maintain. Conversely, the GlobalMedia solution was designed and installed in a matter of days, even enabling a bridge to the installed legacy video equipment if needed.
Remote Control
The first deployment is a portable GlobalMedia cart that is rolled into the patient's room, equipped with a battery backup so that the system never has to be shut down. The pediatricians log in remotely through a secure VPN connection and choose whether to transmit their own video to the patient's room. Once the in-room staff places the digital stethoscope on the patient, the doctor can hear the heart tones and oscillations while simultaneously controlling the camera to zoom in on the patient or monitors. An assessment that previously took up to 20 minutes can now be accomplished in minutes using high-quality video and audio.
The system can also be used by the hospital's rapid response teams. In this scenario, the ICU nurse or respiratory therapist can communicate with the doctor and run pre-codes on patients, in essence creating an in-house physician available around the clock.

Future plans include using the system to connect to a staff of Spanish interpreters, facilitating communications between doctors and non-English speaking patients. Additionally, due to the lack of available specialists and sub-specialists in the area, the team is considering using the system to generate revenue by consulting patients from other hospitals before transporting them to their pediatric ICU.
