Virginia: The Latest to Reimburse Telemedicine

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (March 9, 2010) — The Commonwealth of Virginia has joined eleven other states in requiring that insurance companies cover telemedicine services.

The Virginia State Legislature unanimously approved legislation last week that mandates insurance coverage for telemedicine, and sent the bill to Governor Bob McDonnell who signed it into law.

Joel E. Barthelemy, Managing Director of GlobalMedia Group, LLC, points out that Virginia lawmakers have come to a familiar conclusion.  “As people continue to focus on healthcare, they’re finding that innovative telemedicine solutions reduce cost and increase the access and quality of healthcare,” Barthelemy says.

The other states are: California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas.

The Virginia bill calls on health insurance companies, HMOs and healthcare subscription plans to provide full coverage for telemedicine services, defined as interactive audio, video or other electronic media for the purpose of medical diagnosis, consultation or treatment.  Insurers are allowed to perform utilization review to determine whether telemedicine is appropriate in specific cases.
